A Personal Message From the Attorney
"When an alien resides with you in your land, do not molest him. You shall
treat the alien who resides with you no differently than the natives born
among you; have the same love for him as for yourself; for you too were
once aliens in the land of Egypt. I, the Lord, am your God." (Lev. 19:33).
Sometimes people ask me why I became an immigration lawyer. I became a
lawyer because I wanted to be an advocate. I wanted to make a difference.
There are many ways to do that, but you might say that my mind was drawn
to the law.
But what drew me to immigration was my heart. My wife is an immigrant from
Mexico. My mother-in-law, who lives with us, is also an immigrant from Mexico.
Immigrants are my family. They are what make our house a home. Although
there are many different kinds of immigration cases, in the end they all
tend to have one thing in common: an immigrant facing a complicated and
confusing legal system, wanting to feel secure as they make their way
through it.
What does this have to do with the scripture at the beginning of this message?
I represent immigrants and their families. Although I am not an immigrant,
I am part of an immigrant family.
So for me, the command to love the alien, the immigrant, as yourself is
not some abstraction. It's just loving my family.
Serving the immigrant community is how I take that command further. Representing
immigrants is another way to have the same love for immigrants as for
myself--by taking care of you and your family just how I would take care of mine.
Thanks for reading.
